Why Meta Preview Images Sometimes Do Not Update Immediately

Social media preview images can stay outdated due to cache, metadata issues, or sharing tool delays.

HELP-0107 CATEGORY: Troubleshooting

If you update a page image and social platforms still show the old preview, that does not always mean the website is wrong.

Platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and others cache preview data so they do not have to fetch it fresh every time a link is shared. That means the old preview image, title, or description may continue showing even after the website metadata has been updated correctly.

In some cases, the issue is just cache delay. In others, the page may still have old or conflicting open graph metadata.

It helps to separate the two. If the page source has the correct metadata but the platform still shows the old preview, caching is the likely cause. If the metadata itself is wrong or missing, the page needs adjustment.

This issue feels worse than it usually is because preview links are highly visible and clients often expect them to update instantly. They often do not.

If you report the problem, send the page URL, say which platform is showing the wrong preview, and tell us what the preview should be showing instead. That allows us to tell whether the issue is purely cache-related or whether the metadata itself needs correction.
